Truly, no one is a dime a dozen…

Digging a Deeper Well

We weren’t going to write Digging a Deeper Well this week…until a Seth Godin post dropped into our inbox. We’ve been writing about intentionality in ministry of late, and last week we noted the need to intentionally go “one by one by one” in leading congregations. Godin’s post offers a relevant link to an online survey titled “You probably don’t look like the average American.” In just seven questions, the survey rebuts our ready assumption that “lots of people think like me.” Answer those seven questions and you will see. The HIGHEST score you can get on the quiz is 7% agreement.

You can take the survey here.

As we lead churches, perhaps we can release the goal of “getting everyone to agree” (which this survey pretty much shows to be a fool’s errand). Perhaps we can be freed to imagine Christian community as something so much more – a place where specific people, with a bouquet of diverse views and experiences, acting in different ways with different goals, get to learn about God’s love and grow together in and through their differences. There is pain in this, and there can be misunderstanding and a significant amount of stress, but amazing things can happen in Christian community formed by more than the goal of “we all agree.”

What a joyful task God has put before us!

Truly, no one is a dime a dozen.
